e-learning & libraries - anybody care?

Sitting on a goldmine? - Improving provision and services for learners by aggregating and using 'learner behaviour data' is the title of a free workshop on 12/12/2008 at JISC's London Office that ALT has been funded to organise.

The workshop will draw on the work of the JISC-funded TILE project, and David Kay (originator of this thread) will be one of the presenters. For more details see:

Social networking and formal learning

Yes the pre-arrival work and student services support have used Facebook. Last year was a trial and we got good feedback. This year a lot more pre-arrival activity is taking place with over 300 freshmen (fresh people??) already interacting.

In terms of formal teaching we have allowed staff to use it if they wish. We have more groups started by students who invite staff to join them, thus making the social decision the students not ours.

Our media people have also been using Wetpaint (a wiki) to support interaction. Indeed we have developed a multiple of linked wikis - staff inviting the students in to the core module wiki, and then individual students deciding if they want staff in theirs or not - this more democratic approach avoided us trying to write rules or regs and allowing the development of the places to be socially mediated.

Your comments on Crowdvine at ALT-C; and a plug for an ALT-C 2008 "review wiki"

I also really appreciated the fact that you could export your schedule to Outlook, it meant that the room details etc was easily available on my Blackberry even when I was not connected to Crowdvine live which was a big help.

reflecting on the poster/paper awards

Repling to Kath's point on "more discussion based small sessions facilitated at these events. They don't need to be long, they certainly don't need to be 'formal'."

I was trying to do that with my workshops and utilised the online tools we have for feedback and discussion. Hopefully there will be some reflection and more comments over the next few weeks.

One of the workshops had about 60-70 people in them, so though small is nice, it's not impossible to do it in a bigger space with lots of people.

Hood 2.0 It's a Web 2.0 World out there now, job done... The feedback from the session can be found here:

I think there is a real opportunity for conferences such as ALT-C to build on the Fringe and add something new and extra to the event.

I posted this to the review wiki, but re-posting here as relevant to this discussion.

For me the Fringe was one of the highlights, it almost formalised the networking and chatter that happens anyway at the ALT-C conference, but as a result it was captured and (if you did know) you could come along. My main reason was that it allowed for stuff to happen outside the formal submission/acceptance/presentation process. Many conferences are now adding in unconference themes, providing rooms for spontaneous demonstrations and presentations. For example we wanted to show people the videos from the (on the official schedule) Slam session; however due to the ambient noise and acoustics it just wasn't possible. If rooms were available or even large screens then maybe we could have done this.

Implicit themes at ALT-C

Interesting points. Definitely a divide to be avoided. Let's expose all of us, LTs, teachers, students to broad knowledge of learning. I learned at ALT-C ;-)

that's great Fleur. Do stay in touch if you find some good examples that work in getting people enthused and getting e-learning on the normal academic and pedagogic agenda.

Tag clouds, interests and expertise

Of course, you're absolutely correct, David. It's the age-old argument about the English language - the sensitive balancing act between maintaining rigour defined by the taught rules of language and the need to allow the language to develop dynamically (something I once had a raging battle over with an American colleague I lived with on a North Sea oil rig for several months when he promoted "Americansms" and I defended our language heritage).

I somehow sense a link with the debate this afternoon at the Web 2.0 symposium in auditorium 2??

And if we were unable to acccept and endorse the value of a constantly changing language, we'd still all be talking like Chaucer.
